Cairns Based Law Student Shane Cuthbert Recognised

Shane Cuthbert has been nominated in the student award category. Submissions made to the Australian Law Awards will be judged based on an inidividuals academic achievments and contributions to legal study, work experience, community advocacy and extra curricular activities demonstrating a passion for the law and a strong commitment to the cause of Justice.
Shane Cuthbert has actively engaged in law reform and has made submissions to the Women's Safety and Justice Taskforce on Coercive Control and the Queensland Human Rights Commission's review of the anti-discrimination laws. As a law student at CQU Shane has been involved in many extra-curricular activities on and off campus. In 2021 Shane became a student mentor, CQU Ambassador and in 2022 Shane was elected as the Treasurer of the Social Innovation Network.
Shane's earlier interactions with the law were not positive and involved penalties and/or punishment although now, Much has changed. Shane recently had the opportunity to meet former Magistrate Pat O'Shane, who had sentenced Shane as a young adult. It was an incredible opportunity for him to discuss his past from a very different place, as a student of, and advocate for the law.
